Treasurer's report

Unfinished Business
Magazine Fundraiser is over! Received invoice from QSP Readers Digest in amount of $16,048.23. Heather Shields reported an estimated profit of $8500.00. Estimated expenses are $1459.00 for magazine sales.

Kathy advised PTO since the children who won were to do the Gyro Machine, which was not available, Kathy, Jane Mayo, and Mr. Bell, took them to the Factory for an afternoon. The kids had a great time with no one disappointed. Harry Willis is coming today to tie up any loose ends to the Magazine sale fundraiser.

Thelma (MMS secretary) retired in December. Because there was no PTO meeting in Dec., Kathy and Jane went ahead and bought her a charm to add to her charm bracelet. Kathy asked if PTO was willing to reimburse Jane $31.00 for the charm. It was approved.

Kathy announced that the Rotarian Breakfast is scheduled for February 26th. It was decided at the Nov. meeting that a volunteer sheet be passed around at the Jan. meeting for volunteers to make the food to be served. Mrs. McDowell with the Rotary is sponsoring a creative writing contest for the 7th grade teachers. PTO will buy plates, cups, etc. and will purchase gravy (for the biscuits & gravy) from Mrs. Lois' Restaurant.

The Middle Years response was extremely poor (only 5 responses). Therefore, due to the low response no action has been taken.

Kathy thanked the seven people who attended the Volunteer Conference in December. MMS had the largest turn out from all schools. It was very informative and all enjoyed.

New Business
The 8th grade dance has been scheduled for May 21, 2004.

PTO discussed having another evening meeting in the spring. Many suggestions were made to get more PTO involvement. These suggestions were:
1. Next fall during the 6th grade orientation the Co-Presidents could have a quick talk on parent participation and exactly what the MMS PTO does throughout the school year.
2. Put an ad in the Franklin Press in the New School Year addition in August. It would address "getting to know your PTO."
3. MMS asking each elementary school for 2 representatives from each school (whose children will be advancing to MMS) to join the MMS PTO.
4. If having another evening meeting in the spring, invite parents of the incoming 6th grade.

Committee Reports:
Teacher/Staff Appreciation: Dawn reported everything went very well and thanks to all who contributed.

Newsletter: Newsletter was distributed by Terri and Judy. Thanks to both!

Volunteer Coordinators: No volunteers needed at this time from any of the teachers.

Funding Requests:
Mr. Bonard asked Kathy to report that Gear-up will be adding some new afterschool/ enrichment classes with possible Saturday field trips. More info will be provided later.

Student Counsel would like to sponsor a dance on Feb. 13, 2004. PTO has no objection as long as Mr. Bell and Officer Seagle approve.

Mr. Bell announced that MMS has hired Elizabeth Hwey to teach Chorus. She will still be under contract with Jackson County until they find her a replacement. MMS is looking forward to working along side her.

Mr. Bell announced that MMS has just been granted funding to hire 3 new tutors for identified students.

Officer Seagle aanounced that the 3rd year of MMS's grant for a representative from the Sheriff
department will expire this year. Support to continue this program by talking to our county commissioners by asking them to fund this program next year.

Officer Seagle announced that there will be a forum on Jan. 24th at the Middle School - topic discussed will be on Drug Problems in our community.

Meeting adjourned.
