C. Unfinished Business
1. Staff Appreciation
The next staff appreciation day is February 10th. Elizabeth volunteered to bring flowers for the table centerpiece. Jane asked that members volunteer to bring something homemade i.e.: cookies, cakes , desserts, etc.
2. Big Red Award
The Big Red Award is scheduled for January 19th at an unknown location. Need volunteers. Total head count is 271. Pat Davis and Christina Sapp asked the PTO to fund this one completely. At $4.00 per student, total cost will be $1080.00. A motion was made to fund the Big Red Award and it passed.
3. Newsletter
Jane Mayo reported that Amber Golebiewski did a great job writing the newsletter especially since it was due before they thought it was due! Thank you to Gear Up for making copies and distributing newsletters. Because Amber works full time, if you have anything that needs to go into the newsletters, please email her with the info.
D. New Business
1. SAS cards
Pat Davis reported that the school has decided to acknowledge all the A and A/B students at the end of each 9 weeks with a certificate with a miniature candy bar. The school has printed the certificates but needs volunteers to write students names in the spaces provided. PTO will get volunteers for this project. Heather Shields volunteered to write all A and A/B students' names in paragraph form, in alphabetized order for the Franklin Press.
2. Evening meeting
Jane announced that MMS PTO will have an evening meeting on April 4th with the Franklin High School PTO. Officer Seagle is working with the high school and MMS to coordinate an anti-drug program for this evening meeting. It will be like the program MMS had last year to recognize the severe problem with drugs (especially meth) in our community. The problem is not going away just seems to be getting bigger!
3. 8th grade dance
Jane asked us to be thinking of the 8th grade dance. She will put together a committee that will pick a date, get decorations, ask parents to volunteer to bring food and chaperone.
E. Funding Requests
1. Skeleton for 7th grade
It was brought to Jane's attention, that last year the PTO agreed to pay for a skeleton for the science department, not to exceed $400.00. Therefore, the PTO will fund this commitment.
2. Coffee House reading night - February 17th
Ms. Cotton asked the MMS PTO to help with expenses for the family reading night. A motion was made that the PTO give Ms. Cotton $80.00 for paper goods, cocoa, and cookies.
3. Macon Program for Progress
MPP has asked the MMS PTO to donate $50.00 for furniture for their new facility. MPP helps children ages 10-14 with after school activity programs. It was discussed and agreed that since MPP helps specifically middle school aged children, that we should help with their need. A motion was made and approved that MMS PTO will give $100.00 to MPP.
F. Terry Bell
Did not attend meeting.
G. Pat Davis
Ms. Davis and MMS is trying to get more parental involvement and to make MMS more community friendly. Jane Mayo suggested that pictures of the Big Red Award and an article about what the Big Red Award is about, be put in the newspaper.
Also, Ms. Davis reported that Mrs. Pittman will be starting an anger management class in connection with Students Against Violence.
H. Officer Seagle
Discussed April 4th evening meeting. The drug task force will hopefully be presenting a program for the community, both FHS PTO and MMS PTO will host this program. More details later.
I. Gear Up
Mr. Bonard said that this week students should be taking home a letter from Gear Up offering several different classes for students after school. These classes are fun classes for any student to sign up for. He just ask that if a student signs up, to please come to all the classes. There are a series of classes. The Student Council will host the next school dance on February 25th from 7:00pm until 9:00pm. He will need volunteers for food and to chaperone. Jane gave him Jeff Walker name. He was an excellent DJ for last year's 8th grade dance. Also, Mr. Bonard has been given many tickets to WCU's basketball game on Feb. 17th. Gear Up might possibly offer a dinner to be included depending on how many students want to go. Will have a bus leave MMS at 4:00pm and returning around 9-10:00pm. He will need volunteers to ride over and back in bus.
Next meeting will be February 10th in the Gear Up trailer at noon.
