PTO Minutes -May 14, 2004

The Macon Middle school PTO meeting was called to order by co-president Kathy Wilde May 14, 2004 at noon. The meeting was held in Heather Shield's classroom. (See attendance log in the secretary's notebook for members that were present.)

Business
Minutes were unanimously approved from the last meeting.

Treasurer's report - Heather Shield reported that there was $7,911.87 in the PTO account. This total did not include the bill for the catered staff lunch and two checks worth a total of $55.96 to be deposited.

Unfinished Business
Nominations for officers were approved: Jane Mayo- president, Dawn Carapazza -vice president, Heather Shields- treasurer, Elizabeth Shaller-secretary.

Jeff Walker from Carolina Music will be the DJ for the upcoming eighth grade dance. He is charging the PTO $375.00 to DJ and will have a light show and smoke. Tony Curtis, a parent, offered to DJ the dance for free, but we had already hired Mr. Walker. Ryan Finn has DJ'd in the past, but we were unable to reach him. Photos were discussed for the dance. The PTO will purchase enough film to take an additional 230 pictures to be given to the 8th graders attending the dance as a gift. There was enough film for 70 pictures left over from last years dance. Digital photos were discussed but it was too late to get everything together for digital photos. Digital photos could be an option for next year. There will be no newsletter for the last grading period. Report cards will be mailed home so the newsletter would have to be sent home separately.

Committee Reports

Staff Appreciation-Thank you notes were passed around from the staff. The week was full of treats.
Monday-fruit, cheese and pastries
Tuesday-hot cheese dip, tortilla chips and salsa
Wednesday-catered lunch
Thursday-apples
Friday-a rose bush for every member of the staff
Thank you to Dawn Carapazza and Jane Mayo for taking care of staff appreciation week.

Volunteer Coordinator- Monica Cansler did a great job lining up volunteer proctors for the end of grade tests.

SAS-Christina Sapp did a super job collecting prizes for the SAS cards. There was some discussion about conducting a survey from the students to evaluate which prizes were the most popular and encourage some student imput for additional prizes for next year. In addition, all members present would like to see the names of students that make honor roll published in the newspaper.

Sign-Theresa Trammel did a terrific job on the sign all year long.

Newsletter-Judy Chapman did a great job with the newsletter and the web site. Thank you Teri Stinger for passing the newsletters out.

Officer Seagle
Officer Seagle reported that his position has been funded for the next year. He hopes that two more positions will be opened, one position in Highlands and the other in Nantahala. Officer Seagle discussed a new student group that he is hoping to form called S.A.V.E. (students against violence everywhere). Mary Pitman has already ordered some materials for the group. The purpose of the group would be to teach students how to mediate crisis situations. The students would meet once a week or every other week.

Thank you to all of the volunteers that continue to make MMS a better school for all of our children. What you do matters!
