PTO Minutes - October 9, 2003

Meeting called to order at 12:00pm by Kathy Wilde. (See attendance log in Volunteer log for members present.)

Business
Minutes from last meeting were read and approved.

Treasurer's report
Heather Shields reported the checking account balance $7097.95. This balance does not include the 3 checks written for top sellers in the Magazine fundraiser which totals $60.00. Mrs. Shields did order a stamp from the bank, approximately $35.00.

Unfinished Business
Kathy announced that the magazine fundraiser had a prize change, the cow contest was now going to be a monkey sling-shot contest.

There was some discussion for next year giving the students incentives for turning in their magazine sales at the first turn in date. However, after some debate it was decided to continue to proceed with the way things have been done in the past.

Kathy asked for volunteers on counting money and magazine orders on October 22nd and October 24th. Volunteers will be especially needed on Oct. 22nd! Usually this date has had the most orders turned into the PTO. Meet in the front of the office at 8:45am.

November 7th is the tentative date for the candy scramble. Kathy asked for volunteers to buy candy from Wal-Mart, Kmart, any grocery stores the day after Halloween when it goes on sale. Carol Ann Elliot will collect from Kmart. Angie McCall will collect from Winn-Dixie and Elizabeth Shaller from Wal-Mart.

November 10th is the date for all the prizes to be given out, (to students who have qualified) from the Magazine fundraiser and for the monkey sling-shot contest.

Kathy also reported that MMS receives 40% of all magazine sales!

Middle Years publication will be given out with all report cards. It will cost MMS $258.00 to have Macon Printing copy newsletter. On the backside of newsletter it will ask parents to check the appropriate box as to whether they would like the PTO to continue with the newsletter at report card time. Terri Stenger and Theresa Trammel volunteered to put newsletter in the teachers boxes.

New Business
Angie McCall spoke on behalf of "Support Our Students Day" on October 25th from 11:00am until 2:00pm at Big Bear Pavilion on the Greenway. Over 2,000 sites across the country will rally community support for after school programs. This celebrates all the after school programs and what they do for our children and families. There will be lots of carnival type booths with prizes, food, and candy. Any organization is encouraged to set up a table allowing you to demonstrate what your company offers our community and its services. For more information contact Macon Program for Progress.

Angie McCall also told us of the VIP program for Middle School students. This program is 5 years old and allows eligible students from MMS to be in an after school program. Its hours are from 3:15pm until 6:00pm at the old Union School. Students are required to do their homework for the first hour and then allowed to pick an activity (art, computer, sports, etc.). Information is available in MMS lobby.

Committee Reports
Kathy thanked the Volunteer Coordinators for a great job organizing volunteers for the Health Fair and for Mrs. Wiggins. Jennifer Jones would like volunteer hours as soon as possible after each months hours have been tallied. Kathy reminded all volunteers to sign in and also sign out. If you didn't sign out, MMS can't count those minutes or hours.

Dawn Carapazzo was not present to give report on Bosses Day.

Recognition cards will be given to students in the 6th grade at the assembly. Local businesses have given coupons to be given out. Christina Sapp will get list of students from teachers and will get to Mr. Bonard.

Mr. Bonard eas not present to give report on Gear-up. He did send a letter and it was read by Jane Mayo. See attached letter for report.

Funding request was made from Ms. Rita Hubbs on behalf of the Science Olympiad team. She was supposed to attend meeting to present her request to PTO members. She did not attend meeting. Kathy will check with her and ask her to attend next meeting.

Ingles Advantage cards. Parents are encouraged to sign up for advantage cards at Ingles and make sure to put MMS as the recipient of dollars. Some people who attended meeting didn't realize that MMS was participating. Therefore, go back to Ingles managers and request MMS to be on your cards.
